5 Signs You Need Emergency AC Repair Right Now

Not every AC problem is an emergency. A system that's running a little less efficiently than usual, or a filter that needs changing, can usually wait for a scheduled appointment.

But some AC problems can't wait. In Cape Coral's heat — where summer temperatures regularly hit 95°F and humidity makes it feel even hotter — a failed air conditioner can become a health emergency, especially for elderly residents, young children, and pets.

Here are five signs that you need emergency AC repair today, not next week.

1. Your AC Has Completely Stopped Working

This one is obvious, but it's worth stating clearly: if your air conditioner isn't running at all and it's hot outside, that's an emergency.

In Southwest Florida's summer heat, indoor temperatures in a home without AC can reach dangerous levels within hours. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real risks, particularly for:

  • Adults over 65
  • Young children and infants
  • People with heart conditions, diabetes, or other chronic illnesses
  • Pets

If your AC stops working completely during hot weather, call for emergency service immediately. Don't wait to see if it "comes back on."

What to do while you wait: Open windows if outdoor temperatures drop at night, use fans to circulate air, move to the lowest level of the home (heat rises), and stay hydrated.

2. You Smell Burning or Electrical Odors

A burning smell from your AC is a serious warning sign that should never be ignored.

Possible causes include:

  • Overheating motor — the blower motor or compressor is running hot
  • Electrical short or burning wiring — a fire hazard
  • Burning dust — usually harmless if it only happens at the start of the season, but persistent burning smells are not normal

If you smell burning, turn the system off immediately and call for emergency service. Do not continue running a system that smells like burning electrical components — this is a fire risk.

3. You Hear Loud Banging, Grinding, or Screeching

Your AC should operate with a consistent hum. Loud, unusual noises are your system's way of telling you something is seriously wrong.

Banging or clanking: Often means a loose or broken component inside the unit — a fan blade, a loose part in the compressor, or a broken motor mount. Running the system with a loose component can cause rapid, catastrophic damage.

Grinding: Usually indicates worn bearings in the blower motor or compressor. If the bearings fail completely, the motor can seize.

Screeching or squealing: Often a failing belt (in older systems) or bearings under stress. This sound typically gets worse quickly.

What to do: Turn the system off and call for service. Running a system that's making these sounds can turn a repair into a full replacement.

4. You See Ice on the Unit or Refrigerant Lines

Ice on your AC system might seem counterintuitive — it's a cooling system, after all. But ice formation is a sign of a serious problem, not normal operation.

Ice typically forms because of:

  • Severely restricted airflow (extremely clogged filter, blocked vents, or a failed blower motor)
  • Low refrigerant due to a leak

When the evaporator coil freezes, it can't absorb heat from your home's air. The system runs but doesn't cool. If you let it continue, the ice can spread to the compressor — and compressor damage is expensive.

What to do: Turn the system off (leave the fan running on "fan only" if possible to help it thaw). Check and replace the air filter. Call for service — if the cause is a refrigerant leak, you need a licensed technician.

5. Water Is Leaking Into Your Home

A small amount of condensation near your outdoor unit is normal. Water pooling inside your home near the air handler is not.

Indoor water leaks from your HVAC system can cause:

  • Water damage to ceilings, walls, and floors
  • Mold growth within 24–48 hours in Florida's humidity
  • Damage to electrical components

The most common cause is a clogged condensate drain line. In Florida's heat and humidity, algae grows quickly in these lines and can cause a complete blockage. Some systems have a safety float switch that shuts the system off when the drain backs up — if your AC suddenly stops working and you notice water near the air handler, this may be why.

What to do: Turn the system off to prevent further water damage. Call for service. The longer water sits, the more damage it causes.

When to Call 911 Instead

If anyone in your home is showing signs of heat stroke — confusion, hot and dry skin, rapid pulse, loss of consciousness — call 911 immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency.

Signs of heat exhaustion (a precursor to heat stroke) include heavy sweating, weakness, cold and pale skin, nausea, and headache. Move the person to a cooler environment and call for medical help if symptoms don't improve quickly.
